Effective Width Method for determining distortional buckling strength of cold-formed steel flexural C and Z sections

This paper proposes a design method, based on the Effective Width Method, for determining the nominal distortional buckling strength of typical cold-formed steel C and Z sections subjected to bending. The method can be integrated into the classic effective width design provisions specified in AISI S100, and it allows the conventional design approach to cover more comprehensive limit states. The proposedmethod is calibrated by the flexural distortional buckling strength predicted by the Direct Strength Method. Comparison with experimental results indicates that the proposedmethod yields reasonable predictions for the flexural distortional buckling strength of industrial standard C and Z sections. The method offers the same level of accuracy and reliability as the Direct Strength Method.
